Texas BBQ

texas-bbq-Kreuz-MarketI was really excited to try Texas BBQ, you hear so much about it on TV the giant cuts of meat, the smoky flavour with falling off the bones tenderness. Let’s just say expectations were high!

On our way to Austin I started researching some BBQ places to try; conveniently the people of the internet have put together multiple lists of the ‘best’ BBQ in Texas. I learned the most popular place currently is called Franklin BBQ in Austin, except you have to line up for 3 hours to order and if you don’t start lining up before they open there’s a good chance they will run out of whatever you want. That is far too much effort. So I narrowed the list down to a handful of places that appeared on multiple lists and picked one that we were going to pass along the way.Kreuz-Market-lockhart

We didn’t have lunch that day so by the time we arrived at Kreuz Market in Lockhart at 6pm we were starving and super excited. Inside everything was wooden and it was warm and dry with a slight smokey smell. It was like a sauna but with food flavours, disconcerting and delicious at the same time. The meat was sold by weight so we got a little bit of everything. They opened up the giant ovens and bought slabs of meat out to the cutting table in the middle to carve. The chunks of meat were huge and it was black all over from the oven and the smoke. But once they cut it open the meat looked juicy and tender and I am getting really hungry writing about this.

The sausage and the ribs were nice, delicious on their own but they don’t compare to the brisket. OMG the brisket was freaking amazing. It was tender and juicy and really really good. We ate it with a bit of horseradish cream and mustard but really I preferred the meat by itself so you can taste the delicious delicious flavour. I craved brisket for so many days after that and we tried other BBQ places in Texas but nothing beat the brisket at Kreuz Market.

I miss the food in Texas.
